Roger A. Akin, Esquire

Roger Akin is the senior partner of the firm. Prior to being admitted to practice, he taught criminal justice at the college level. Roger joined the predecessor law firm, Sawyer Akin & Herron, in 1982. Before that, he served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Delaware where for four years he was general counsel to the State Board of Education and Department of Public Instruction. While in state service, Roger had the rare privilege of representing the State of Delaware before the United States Supreme Court.

Roger's trial practice responsibilities involve representation of insurance companies and their insureds in personal injury, civil rights and commercial litigation. Roger is also the City Solicitor for the cities Newark and New Castle, Delaware. He performs a wide variety of legal services for the two cities and represents them in court proceedings. Roger was recently successful in representing plaintiffs in environmental tort and age discrimination cases.

Roger formerly published and edited the Delaware District Digest and Delaware Jurisprudence which summarized Delaware federal and state court opinions. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Delaware Bar Association where he is active on several committees.

Roger recently concluded a term on the Board of Directors of the regional Easter Seal Society. He has served as Chairman of the State Desegregation Advisory Committee and has chaired a statewide committee charged with making recommendations to improve the statewide math and science curriculum in public high schools. Roger teaches evening courses at the Legal Education Institute of Widener University and is a soccer referee.

Roger grew up in Wilmington. He attended Mount Pleasant High School, Syracuse University and the University of Maryland School of Law. He served for three years as a Lieutenant in U.S. Army Intelligence, with a tour in Vietnam. Roger's wife Brenda is currently a guidance counselor for the Conrad School of Science. Their daughter is the news editor for the Richmond VA Times Dispatch. Their son is employed in Washington, D.C.
